But will the Austrian institution auction off another Nazi-looted work to pay for “Wally” settlement? The lady who vanished reappears – in Queens. “Portrait of Wally,” Egon Schiele’s 1912 painting of his mistress, Walerie Neuzil, was taken out of a crate where it had been since 1998, and handed over Tuesday by an agent of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to Elisabeth Leopold, widow of the Austrian collector Rudolf Leopold, who died on 29 June.
The transfer took place at an unmarked warehouse in Queens, New York, as part of a settlement in which the Leopold Foundation in Vienna agreed to pay $19m to the heirs of Lea Bondi Jaray, a Jewish art dealer who fled Vienna after the picture was taken from her apartment by Friedrich Welz, a fellow dealer and Nazi party member.

28 juli 2010Els Swaab, voorzitter van de Raad voor Cultuur, is de invloedrijkste persoon in de Nederlandse kunstwereld. Dat staat in de vijfde editie van ‘Wie is Wie in de Kunstwereld’, die vrijdag verschijnt.
Op de tweede plaats staat de functie van de minister van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap. Die stond vorig jaar nog op de eerste plaats, toen Ronald Plasterk de functie vervulde. In de top 5 staan verder onder anderen Gitta Luiten, directeur van de Mondriaan Stichting, en Ben Janssens, bestuursvoorzitter van de kunst- en antiekbeurs Tefaf in Maastricht.
Het grote publiek kent kunstschilder Vincent van Gogh vooral vanwege zijn afgesneden oor. Dat bleek maandag uit een onderzoek dat TNS NIPO uitvoerde voor Het Dolhuys, het nationaal museum van de psychiatrie in Haarlem.
In opdracht van het museum stelde TNS NIPO aan Nederlanders de vraag of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) gek of geniaal was. Aan het onderzoek werkten 532 mensen mee.
Op de vraag Waar denkt u aan bij de schilder Vincent van Gogh? noemde de helft van de mensen zijn afgesneden oor, gevolgd door ‘kunstschilder’ en ‘zonnebloemen’. Van de ondervraagden omschrijft 38 procent de kunstenaar als ‘gek’. Daarnaast wordt Van Gogh ook creatief, meesterlijk, eenzaam en depressief genoemd. Op 29 juli is het precies 120 jaar geleden dat Van Gogh stierf; twee dagen nadat hij een poging tot zelfmoord deed.
Collapsed financial services giant looks to pay off some debts. Sotheby’s New York will sell the Neuberger Berman and Lehman Brothers corporate art collections on 25 September, now that a bankruptcy court has approved the sale. Proceeds will go towards paying off Lehman’s creditors.
Work on artist’s last major work carried out by original foundry. Henry Moore’s heaviest bronze sculpture, Large Divided Oval: Butterfly, has been restored in Berlin. Weighing nearly nine tons, it was his final major work, completed just before he died in 1986. Butterfly stands in the middle of a circular basin, outside the entrance to Berlin’s House of World Cultures, a centre for non-European arts.
Butterfly was initially a loan to (then West) Berlin in 1986, but the city council wanted the sculpture permanently, and asked Moore if he would donate it. The letter arrived just before his death and went unanswered. In 1988 it was sold by the Henry Moore Foundation to Berlin for 4.5m Deutschmarks (around $2.58m at the exchange rate of the day), then a huge sum for a public sculpture.
