High priced male artists such as Warhol and Picasso dominate the stands. A list of the artists whose work you are most likely to see at this year’s Art Basel, based on the number of galleries who are bringing pieces, is headed—perhaps unsurprisingly—by the prolific Andy Warhol, with works on show at 28 stands. Artists making work in the first half of the 20th century rank highly, including Alexander Calder and Pablo Picasso, although the list is also speckled with 1960s conceptualists such as Sol LeWitt and Lawrence Weiner. But the top 40 most represented artists on show at the fair are all men.

17 juni 2010Collectors vied for works with proven track records and critical validation. Art Basel began with a bang yesterday at the preview of the 41st edition of the modern and contemporary fair. As they crowded into the stands, collectors reported a renewed sense of excitement at the fair.
“There’s an energy level here, a vibrancy—more than I’ve seen in the past two fairs,” said Miami billionaire Norman Braman, as he peered into a cupboard on David Juda’s stand (B10). Collectors Howard and Cindy Rachofsky of Dallas, the Rubells and De La Cruzs from Miami, Dimitris Daskalopoulos, the contemporary Chinese art collector Uli Sigg and Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich accompanied by his partner Dasha Zhukova were also among the collectors attending the fair.
Galleries bring large-scale works inspired by the Arte Povera spirit of the cheap and the free. Ambitious art is back on the agenda again at Art Unlimited, Art Basel’s exhibition of large-scale installations and videos. In another sign of returning market confidence—following strong results at the New York auctions last month—galleries have been making a splash and using the cavernous spaces in Hall 1 to make bold statements.
Now in its 11th year, Art Unlimited, which opened to VIPs yesterday afternoon, presents 56 projects, six of them larger than 200 sq. m—in sharp contrast to the slimmed-down offerings in the section last year. The fair organisers also report a 20% increase in the number of applications to Art Unlimited (151) compared with 2009.
Instead of following the market, curators need to provide leadership. The UK has a long, inglorious history of curatorial insularity when it comes to contemporary art. In the first half of the 20th century our museums and galleries missed countless opportunities to purchase works by the great artists then working in Europe. Even today, few make much effort to acquire works by living artists from outside the UK. And if artists from the European and North American mainstream have often been ignored, those from other parts of the world might just as well not have existed.
